Kristen Wiig is the frontrunner to play the villain in WONDER WOMAN 2, and I can’t say I’m a fan of that choice, should it come to fruition. The Bridesmaids star is the top choice to play Cheetah, and while I think a female villain is appropriate for the sequel, I’m surprised the studio isn’t looking at someone a bit more physically intimidating.
Patty Jenkins is returning to write, direct and produce the Wonder Woman sequel, which will see Gal Gadot reprise her now iconic role. Jenkins has been courting Wiig for some time, and while the actress hasn’t decided one way or the other, it seems like the studio is preparing to make an offer following a meeting with the SNL alum.
Warner Bros. will release Wonder Woman 2 on Nov. 1, 2019.
Make no mistake… Wiig is a comedic force of nature, but she has always seemed to stand out the wrong way when it comes to dramas, in my humble opinion. She didn’t work for me in The Martian or mother!, and with the exception of The Skeleton Twins and, to a lesser extent, The Diary of a Teenage Girl, her dramatic work in indie movies has left me questioning her range.
Now, if Jenkins thinks that Wiig has what it takes to play a comic book movie villain, and one who takes on Wonder Woman, no less, then I’m inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt, especially given the performance she coaxed out of Gadot, who isn’t exactly Meryl Streep. That said, Wiig will have to really apply herself for the role, which will likely be physically demanding and then some.
Wiig’s schedule can certainly accommodate the Wonder Woman sequel, as she has already filmed Richard Linklater’s adaptation of Where’d You Go, Bernadette? starring Cate Blanchett. Wiig is represented by UTA, and Deadline broke the news of her potential casting.
