Apple has picked up its first scripted comedy series featuring yet another A-list package, with Kristen Wiig set to star and Reese Witherspoon executive producing.
The untitled half-hour project is based on Curtis Sittenfeld’s You Think It, I’ll Say It, a collection of short stories that tackle issues of class, relationships and gender roles. It’s unclear if the series will be based on one particular story or follow the entire collection thematically.
Colleen McGuinness will serve as creator/showrunner and executive producer, alongside Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter for Hello Sunshine and Wiig. Sittenfeld will serve as a consulting producer.
Apple’s first comedy series pickup joins a slew of high profile drama projects, including Steven Spielberg and Bryan Fuller’s Amazing Stories, Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston’s morning show drama, Octavia Spencer’s Are You Sleeping, Ron Moore’s space drama, sci-fi drama See from Steven Knight and Francis Lawrence and docuseries Home from Matt Tyrnauer and Matthew Weaver.
The role would mark Wiig’s first series regular role since leaving Saturday Night Live in 2012. She’s been steadily working in features since, including Bridesmaids, The Martian and Richard Linklater’s upcoming adaptation of Where’d You Go, Bernadette. She is represented by UTA.
