In the most glorious Marvel casting news since, um, Benedict Cumberbatch was simultaneously confirmed as Dr. Strange, Krysten Ritter has landed the lead role in Netflix’s JESSICA JONES series. The 13-episode series, one of four leading up to an eight-episode The Defenders event (the other three follow Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist) follows superhero-turned-private-eye Jones, who owns her own detective agency. Charlie Cox is playing Daredevil on his series, and the current frontrunner for Luke Cage is Mike Colter.
Ritter is an awesome and slightly unconventional choice for this role. She’s done a lot of quirky, comedic work, on Veronica Mars (not a comedy, but her character was almost entirely comedic) and Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23, but she’s also done a fair share of drama: Breaking Bad, the one-season Gravity, and the recent indie drama Listen Up Philip. Even when she’s being funny, she brings a kind of jaded bitterness to her roles that’s perfect for Jessica Jones. Bravo, Netflix. A+ casting work.
