Brian Grazer appears to finally be getting his LA RIOTS film into production next spring as the Oscar-winning writer of the script, John Ridley, has been tapped to take over directing duties. The untitled film is being produced by Broad Green Pictures and Imagine Entertainment.
The film chronicles the 1992 Los Angeles riots, which erupted after the videotaped police beating of Rodney King and led to 53 deaths and one billion dollars in damage.
Ridley has had a long career in television but rose to mainstream awareness after penning the script for the Academy Award-winning film 12 Years A Slave. He recently made his feature directorial debut with the Jimi Hendrix biopic Jimi: All By My Side and created the critically acclaimed anthology series American Crime.
The Grazer-produced film has long been in development at Imagine Entertainment with Spike Lee attached to direct. Unfortunately, that deal fell apart over budget issues. After the enormous success of this summer’s Straight Outta Compton from F. Gary Gray which featured the riots, interest in the topic and a film version has grown.
