A favorite of our judges, PANTHERS tells the true story of the Black Panthers in 1960s California. When the Panthers are approached by the mother of a slain, unarmed black man and are inspired to take their fledgling group to new heights of public resistance, eliciting a dangerous campaign of repression from local police. Pitched as The Wire meets Narcos, the script takes on a fascinating chapter in American history with intelligence, well-researched detail and a strong instinct for tension and television plotting. Employing impeccable writing to make a complex political story feel fast-paced and exciting, the pilot takes a close look at the growth of a social movement and resonates with many of the topical themes that dominate our headlines in 2018.
