Showtime has released a new full-lenghth trailer and poster for THE CHI, the Chicago-set drama series from recent Emmy winner Lena Waithe.
The show is described as a coming-of-age drama series about an interconnected group of working-class African-Americans on Chicago’s volatile south side, who remind us that no matter what, the human spirit is strong and hope never dies.
The series also seeks to explore the humanity behind the headlines sensationalizing the South Side of Chicago and stars Jason Mitchell, Jacob Latimore, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Alex Hibbert, Yolonda Ross, Armando Riesco and Tiffany Boone.
The show was created and executive produced by Waithe and executive produced by Common and Elwood Reid, with Reid also serving as showrunner. Dope director Rick Famuyiwa directed the pilot episode and also serves as an EP.
Waithe, who was born and raised in Chicago, is coming off of her first Emmy win for Best Writing for a Comedy Series for co-writing the Master of None episode “Thanksgiving” – which was heavily based on her own experience growing up and coming out as gay to her family – with Aziz Ansari.
The Chi will premiere on Showtime on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at 10 p.m. ET.
