Showtime has renewed THE CHI for a second season, the premium cable network announced Tuesday.
Additionally, Ayanna Floyd Davis has signed on to serve as showrunner for the second season. Davis was part of the Season 1 writing staff and wrote Episode 3.
“From viewers and critics alike, the response to The Chi has been so enthusiastic from the very start that our decision to renew the series was an easy one,” said Gary Levine, President of Programming, Showtime Networks Inc, in a statement. “We love the vibrant characters and the nuanced world that Lena has created. Her vision for THE CHI has clearly struck a chord, and we know she has many more moving, personal and resonant stories to tell about her beloved hometown.”
The show is described as a coming-of-age drama series about an interconnected group of working-class African-Americans on Chicago’s volatile south side, who remind us that no matter what, the human spirit is strong and hope never dies.
The Chi currently airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on Showtime and has premiered just four of its 10-episode first season so far.
