Susan Sarandon has been cast as Marilyn Monroe’s mother in the Lifetime miniseries MARILYN. Based on the book written by J. Randy Taraborrelli, the four-hour miniseries will follow Monroe’s life from the time of her first marriage, her time as a worldwide sex symbol, to her tragic death. Sarandon has been cast as Gladys Mortenson, Monroe’s mentally ill mother who was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic who at times was delusional and violent. Mortenson became devoted to Christian Science after a wild adolescence and counselled Monroe to avoid sex at all costs. Laurie Collyer is directing the miniseries from a script penned by Stephen Kronish.
Although Sarandon is best known for her roles in films like Thelma & Louise and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, she also has a long history in TV, including stints on Malcolm in the Middle, Rescue Me, 30 Rock, and The Big C. Some of her most recent film credits include Cloud Atlas and Ben Falcone’s comedy Tammy. Next up, Sarandon has been cast in Mothers Day, a drama also starring Christina Ricci and Sharon Stone.
Sarandon is repped by UTA.
