Before Lin-Manuel Miranda was breaking Broadway records with his massively successful musical Hamilton, he composed and starred in the 2008 Tony Award-winning musical IN THE HEIGHTS. The musical was previously in development at Universal Pictures with Kenny Ortega directing, but has since been taken off the shelf and put in the hands of Harvey Weinstein and the Weinstein Co.
Miranda is set to produce the adaptation of the musical alongside Scott Sanders and Mara Jacobs from Scott Sanders Productions. Marc Klein wrote a draft of the screenplay while the project was at Universal, but no word yet on whether or not it will be used. No director has been named, but the project is sure to be a hot commodity in Hollywood.
Considering Miranda’s Hamilton-grade success and the fact that he composed and starred in the original stage production of In the Heights, he will be heavily involved in the film, but there has been no word on if he will star in the adaptation.
The musical is set in Manhattan’s Washington Heights and follows a bodega owner who struggles with the decision to close his store to retire to the Dominican Republic after receiving a huge inheritance from his grandmother.
Miranda is currently starring on Broadway in Hamilton, but has worked in film as a composer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He is also set to star opposite Emily Blunt in Disney’s reboot, Mary Poppins Returns which is slated for a Dec. 25, 2018 release date.
He is repped by WME and Liebman Entertainment.
