Evans is set to play the lead role of Tom Jackman who, in the BBC miniseries, is a modern-day descendant of Jekyll who is beginning to exhibit the trademark split personality. The father and husband abandons his family, without explaining why, and lives in a fortified basement with a psychiatric nurse as his ally. The two personalities try to co-exist, even though one doesn’t remember what the other does while in control of the body. Unable to stay away from the family he left behind for their own safety, he visits his wife, Hyde assumes control and learns about them, and things grow very complicated.
The series was penned by Steven Moffat and will be adapted by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry for the big screen. The pair previously worked on Shane Black’s The Nice Guys, Doc Savage, and the Death Note remake.
Marc Platt is producing with A Very Good Production’s Ellen DeGeneres and Jeff Kleeman.
This is not the only Jekyll & Hyde-inspired project in the works. Universal is also building an adaptation with Russell Crowe to star.
Fleischer grew to notoriety after helming the cult comedy Zombieland starring Emma Stone and Jesse Eisenberg. More recently he has directed Two Night Stand and the upcoming Netflix series Santa Clarita Diet.
