LUCIFER Review: “Quid Pro Ho”

LUCIFER drops a big secret while enjoying some court room entertainment in “Quid Pro Ho.” This week is about the trial of Warden Perry Smith, the man that killed Chloe’s father. Last week ended with Chloe getting into a car with a bomb attached to the frame while Charlotte stands across the street with her thumb on the detonator.

Amenadiel stops Charlotte from killing Chloe by making a solid case that Lucifer will hate her for eternity, which is not the result she’s looking for. She wants Lucifer to turn his back on Chloe and Earth. If killing Chloe won’t help, maybe she can get her to hate Lucifer?

Lucifer is already in hot water for standing up Chloe on the night of their date. She figures he was with another woman. Lucifer shows up at Chloe’s place ready to explain the fear that kept him away when she reminds him it’s the first day of Perry Smith’s trial. Lucifer goes with Chloe and her mother, Penelope, to court and is surprised to see Charlotte arrive as Smith’s new defense attorney.

Meanwhile, Det. Dan couldn’t be happier about his night with Charlotte. Then, he receives a package at his desk with Boris’ head in a box. Boris was also the star witness for the prosecution. Lucifer doesn’t know what Charlotte is up, but he knows it isn’t good for Chloe. He makes a deal to take the stand in Boris’ place and use his charm to persuade the jury that Boris specialized in finding people to take the wrap and do time for more powerful criminals, like Smith.

At first, it appears to work. Judge and Jury both love Lucifer and Charlotte doesn’t have much experience in court, but she is a quick learner. Meanwhile, Ella helps Det. Dan investigate Boris’ murder. The find the butcher shop where he was beheaded and the butcher gives them a lead on the man that brought Boris in, a Triad.

Charlotte calls Lucifer back to the stand and uses his inability to tell lies to paint Chloe as a possible suspect in one of the murders Smith is accused of. Lucifer sticks to the truth which gives the jury an alternate story to consider. Chloe isn’t disappointed he told the truth, but she does think he leaked a crucial detail that compromised her position. Actually, Charlotte got the intelligence from Dan or his phone, he’s too drunk to remember how he gave it up, but he knows he did.

Maze also knows Dan was the leak and she prods at him when the three of them visit a local Triad compound for information about Boris’ killer. Lucifer explodes when he finds out Dan slept with Charlotte, but doesn’t explain she is his mother. Dan, like Chloe, assumes Lucifer has a more traditional relationship with Charlotte. Madame Li, the Triad boss agrees to give up the man they are looking for if they can defeat her Kang in combat.

Kang is a mountainous brute. Dan doesn’t think he, or Lucifer, stands a chance against him. Lucifer explains neither one of them will be fighting Kang, Maze is going to care of him. This is a fun scene. Kang shows up with two huge swords and tells Maze, “Choose your weapons.” Maze replies, “I choose those.” It’s a great bit for Maze, she’s a fighter and this contest is her thing. However, it enforces her role in the bigger scheme of things. Maze serves as the Luca Brasi of the series. She is loyal, pure, dependable.

She may not be the smartest, but she tries the hardest. This week we see her extend her protection to Chloe when she finds the bomb under her car. Madame Li gives Lucifer the name and location of the man they’re looking for after Maze defeats Kang. Unfortunately, he’s also dead by the time Dan and Lucifer get to him.

Chloe gets the bad news as Charlotte pulls her aside to make a deal. Charlotte points out she is in a good position to win the case, but she might be able to scare Smith into a guilty plea. Charlotte will do this if Chloe goes on the stand and claims Lucifer lied in testimony. Chloe doesn’t agree but Charlotte calls her to the stand anyway in a bid to discredit Lucifer’s testimony. When asked if Lucifer lied about the sequence of events, Chloe supports Lucifer’s testimony, even though she knows it will cost her the trial.

The jury finds Smith not guilty and he walks out of court a free man. However, Dan tips off the Russians that Smith had Boris killed and they pull him off the street later that evening. Smith may not go to jail, but he won’t escape justice. This is an impressive move by Dan, but could blow up in his face or cast more suspicion on Chloe.

There is still one big reveal in “Quid Pro Ho.” Amenadiel drops by Chloe and Maze’s apartment with flowers to apologize to Maze. He meets Penelope outside the apartment and recognizes her. Amenadiel tells Charlotte that his father sent him to Earth 35 years ago to bless a couple that couldn’t conceive a child. That miracle baby turned out to be Chloe. Now he thinks it was God’s plan all along for Chloe to cross paths with Lucifer. Chloe might be the key to getting Lucifer and Charlotte back to the Silver City.
