Marvel’s presence at this year’s Comic-Con has been under wraps. Other than some hints of a Doctor Strange panel, the MCU hasn’t made an official announcement to which titles will be taking the stage. However, it seems like Netflix’s highly anticipated LUKE CAGE is heading to San Diego to make its Comic-Con debut.
Mike Colter, the actor who plays the titular Cage, is scheduled to appear alongside showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker, who produced such shows as Ray Donovan and Southland. Co-star Alfre Woodard, who appeared in Captain America: Civil War as a different character, joins the panel which will also include a sneak peek of the show. The panel is set for Thursday July 21 at 5:45 p.m. in Ballroom 20.
Woodard plays Mariah Dillard, a Harlem politician looking to bring change to the streets she grew up on. Also included in the cast but not yet scheduled to appear at Comic-Con are Free State of Jones star Mahershala Ali as drug lord Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes, Sonia Braga, Frank Whaley, Simone Missic, and Sons of Anarchy alum Theo Rossi as Cage’s enemy Shades. Rosario Dawson, who has also appeared in Daredevil and Jessica Jones is set to return as Claire Temple in Luke Cage.
Just an arms-length away from what is going on with the heroes on the big screen, the Netflix MCU has been building itself since Daredevil. Cage made his first appearance in Jessica Jones as the title character’s lover, and for those who have read the comics, his future wife. The new series, which premieres September 30, will be in line with the grittier and more “adult” (read: more violent and bloody) take on the Marvel comics. Luke Cage will pave the way for Iron Fist (starring Game of Thrones actor Finn Jones) which will then culminate with The Defenders series that will include all four superheroes.
