Luke Evans is reportedly in negotiations to play Gaston in Disney’s live action remake of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, Variety is reporting.
In the 1991 animated film, Gaston is featured as the central antagonist of the story. The character is depicted as rude, shallow, and narcissistic; vowing to marry Belle based on her looks alone.
The Tracking Board previously broke the news that Ryan Gosling was in talks to play the Beast, but he turned it down. If cast, Evans will join Emma Watson, who is starring as Belle in the production. Bill Condon is directing from Stephen Chbosky’s script.
Disney has gone full force with live action remakes of several of their beloved animated fairytales. Maleficent, a retelling of Sleeping Beauty, was released last year and Cinderella will hit theatres this month. Also in the works is The Jungle Book, which is being directed by Jon Favreau.
Evans recently starred in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. He will next be seen in High-Rise. Directed by Ben Wheatley, the sci-fi thriller follows the inhabitants of a modern and fully self-contained apartment building, who gradually isolate themselves completely from the outside world and descend into a primal, violent society.
Evans is repped by WME and United Agents in the UK.
