Mandy Patinkin will join Penelope Cruz in Fernando Trueba’s Spanish-language dramedy THE QUEEN OF SPAIN.

Cruz stars as Macarena Granada, a fictitious Spanish actress who leaves 1950s Hollywood for her hometown of Madrid. Patinkin will play an American screenwriter who works on the movie starring Granada.

This is the third collaboration for Cruz and Trueba. Their first, Belle Epoque, won the Oscar for foreign-language film in 1992. Their second project together, 1998’s Girl of Your Dreams, is the prequel to Queen of Spain. Cruz won her fist Goya Award for her first performance as Granada.

Principal photography will begin on February 29 in Budapest before moving to Madrid. Cruz is producing along with Eric Charles Wilkinson, Cristina Huete and Anne Deluz.

Patinkin, who is perhaps best known for his role as Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride, has been nominated for two Emmys for his work as Saul Berenson on Showtime’s Homeland. He can next be heard as Papa Smurf in Columbia’s Smurfs: The Lost Village.
