Mandy Patinkin is in final negotiations to voice the wise Papa Smurf in THE SMURFS. The reboot comes from Sony Pictures, who recently made two live-action/animated hybrid Smurfs films. However, this film will be completely animated and more in tune with the original interpretations of the characters and the world.
Kelly Asbury, who worked on Shrek 2 and directed Gnomeo & Juliet, will helm the animated adventure. The new film will tell the origin story of the classic characters. Jonathan Winters voiced the character in the recent films, while Don Messick provided the voice in the iconic 1980s cartoon series.
Patinkin has recently gained notoriety for his turn as Saul Berenson on Showtime’s hit series Homeland. He also recently starred in Zach Braff’s Kickstarter-funded Wish I Was Here and lent his voice to the English-dub of Studio Ghibli’s The Wind Rises.
Patinkin is repped by Paradigm.
