Universal has optioned Matt Ruff’s novel BAD MONKEYS and actress Margot Robbie is now attached to star. The action-thriller film will be in production at Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark’s Bluegrass Films company, and they will also produce.
In the novel, Jane Charlotte is arrested for murder, but she claims she works for a secret organization who fights evil. She works for the Department for the Final Disposition of Irredeemable Persons aka “Bad Monkeys,” but her confession lands her in a psychiatric wing. So what is Jane’s truth – does she really work for this organization, is she lying, or is there something else altogether going on?
Robbie will also produce the film under her LuckyChap Entertainment banner, with LuckyChap’s Josey McNamara also serving as executive producer. Universal’s Jon Mone and Bluegrass Films’ Nicholas Nesbitt will oversee production on behalf of their respective parties.
Ruff’s other works include Lovecraft Country, The Mirage, and Fool on the Hill.
Robbie was most recently seen as Jane in Warner Bros. production of Tarzan. She first came onto the scene with Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street and will be seen this fall as popular comic character Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad.
