The Finest Hours director Craig Gillespie is skating his way into the director’s chair for the upcoming Tonya Harding biopic I, TONYA starring Margot Robbie. The script from Steven Rogers centers on the irony free, wildly contradictory, totally true interviews with Tonya Harding and Jeff Gillooly following the attack on Nancy Kerrigan at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in 1994.
Robbie will produce through her LuckyChap Entertainment alongside Bryan Unkeless and his Clubhouse Pictures banner.
Gillespie’s previous work behind the camera includes Million Dollar Arm, Fright Night, indie breakout hit Lars and the Real Girl, and Mr. Woodcock. His television credits include the Showtime dramedy United States of Tara.
Robbie, who continues to expand her credits as both an actress and a producer, recently signed on to another biopic, Fox Searchlight’s Goodbye Christopher Robin, where she will play the wife of Winnie the Pooh author A.A. Milne.
