On Monday morning the internet ran rampant with reports that singer and actress Mariah Carey would be voicing a female version of Commissioner Jim Gordon for Warner Bros’ Lego Movie spinoff, THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE. The inaccurate report stemmed from Deadline, though has since been corrected by other sources. Sources confirm that Carey will instead be voicing Gotham’s Mayor, rather than the gruff police commissioner.
The news comes as a bullet dodged for Batman fans, as the casting of Carey as such an iconic character proved hard to swallow, even for a Lego movie. Carey proves a worthwhile addition to an already incredible voice cast consisting of Will Arnett as Batman, Michael Cera as Robin, Rosario Dawson as Batgirl, Ralph Fiennes as Alfred, and Zach Galifianakis as The Joker.
It’s unknown as to the extent that Carey will play into the story as Gotham’s mayor, as plot details for the animated spinoff are being kept closely under wraps. Seth Grahame-Smith scripted the pic, while Chris McKay directs.
Carey has lent her voice previously to episodes of cartoon series The Proud Family and American Dad, though Lego Batman will mark the first time she voiced a character in a feature.
Carey most recently appeared in Lee Daniels’ The Butler. She also just sold a pitch for an untitled Christmas film to RatPac Entertainment and New Line Cinema.
She’s repped by UTA and WickedCatt Productions.
