UPDATE 05.26.16: Legendary and Universal have won the bidding war that broke out over an action pitch starring Dwayne Johnson and to be written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber. The studios reportedly beat out Sony, Paramount and other bidders for the project, which is being described as “Die Hard in China,” after multiple seven-figure offers landed on the table.
Mary Parent, who recently departed her Disruption Entertainment to head up Legendary’s top film spot, is said to have gone after the project aggressively, and the win is certainly a great way to kick off her tenure at the new job.
Johnson and Thurber recently worked together on the action comedy Central Intelligence which Johnson stars opposite Kevin Hart.
The movie will be produced by Beau Flynn, who Johnson has worked with on San Andreas and the forthcoming big screen adaptation of Baywatch. The movie has generated a considerable amount of bidding buzz with Legendary and Universal offering seven figures. Sony, Paramount, and New Line have also been participating in the bidding war which is expected to end this holiday weekend.
Thurber’s previous film credits include Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story and We’re the Millers. He is repped by WME
Johnson is currently filming Fast 8 with Vin Diesel and Charlize Theron. He also lends his voice to Disney’s animated feature Moana , which will be released later this year. He is repped by WME.
