Did Matthew McConaughey learn nothing from Surfer, Dude?
McConaughey will play Moondog, a rebellious and lovable rogue who just keeps livin’ life large.
The role feels a bit safe and familiar, but perhaps that’s what McConaughey needs right now. He’s coming off three straight-live action flops between Gold (which is a good movie!), The Free State of Jones and The Sea of Trees, though his animated films Sing and Kubo and the Two Strings have scored with both audiences and critics.
While Korine earned kudos from a majority of critics for Spring Breakers, I wasn’t very impressed with that film, and his intriguing follow-up project The Trap never quite came together. At least McConaughey will be working with a top-notch producing team that includes John Lesher (Birdman) and Steve Golin (Spotlight).
Both Korine and Lesher described the project as “irreverent,” which is one of those words you only see in press releases. Though I’m on the fence about The Beach Bum, I have faith that McConaughey will turn it around, with The Dark Tower on the horizon as well as a supporting turn in the Darren Aronofsky production White Boy Rick
Not only does CAA represent McConaughey and Korine, but the agency also arranged the financing for The Beach Bum and will represent North American rights to the film, which starts production in July.
