The film tells the behind-the-scenes story of Edward Snowden, an American computer professional who leaked classified information from the National Security Agency to the mainstream media, starting in June 2013.
The story bases it’s journey on the Guardian journalist Luke Harding’s The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man and Snowden’s Russian Lawyer Anatoly Kucherena’s novel Time of the Octopus.
Harding’s nonfiction book tracks Snowden’s moves from Hawaii to Hong Kong, where he released top-secret NSA documents to both documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras and journalist Glenn Greenwald, while Kucherena’s work more clearly details Snowden’s wait for asylum at the Moscow airport.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt will take up the lead as Snowden opposite Shailene Woodley as his longtime girlfriend Lindsay Mills and Scott Eastwood as a National Security Agency agent who leads the group.
If a deal is struck, Leo would play documentary filmmaker Poitas, director of the Snowden documentary, Citizenfour. Quinto would play Greenwald, the initial recipient of Snowden’s leaked information and Wilkinson would play MacAskill, the defense and intelligence correspondent for The Guardian who helped break the Snowden story wide open.
Moritz Borman and Eric Kopeloff are slated as producers.
Leo will soon star in M. Night Shyamalan’s series Wayward Pines and London Has Fallen.
Quinto’s film I Am Michael, co-starring James Franco, recently premiered at Sundance and he is set to reprise his role as Spock in Star Trek 3.
Wilkinson is coming off a very successful year, he is credited with roles in both Best Picture nominees, Selma and The Grand Budapest Hotel.
