The dark comedy is based on the memoir from Lee Israel. McCarthy will play Israel, who made her living in the 1970s and ’80s writing profiles of stars. When she falls on hard times, Israel turns to counterfeiting the letters of deceased writers and celebrities. When the forgeries raise suspicion, she begins stealing real letters from library archives and selling them.
Archer Gray’s Anne Carey and Amy Nauiokas produce with David Yarnell. Jawal Nga executive produces. Matthew Greenfield and David Greenbaum will oversee for Fox.
The script was penned by Nicole Holofcener, who had also been attached to direct but dropped out. She has been replaced with Heller, who worked with Carey and Nauiokas on The Diary Of A Teenage Girl.
McCarthy most recently starred in The Boss and will next star in Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters.
Heller, who has directed episodes of Casual and Transparent, is best known for adapting last year’s The Diary Of A Teenage Girl, which starred McCarthy’s Ghostbusters‘ co-star Kristin Wiig.
