Plot details are scarce right now, but assuming this will be anything like his “The Expendables” franchise, the film will follow a group of bad-ass female soldiers who must team up to stop some sort of terrorist plot. The roles Streep, Diaz and Jovovich are gunning for are being kept under wraps, but Lerner did mention that he needs to find a director for the project before any official casting can begin.
The script was penned by “The Ugly Truth” scribes Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith. Producing alongside Lerner are Mark Gill and Heidi Jo Markel. Julie Kroll and Trevor Short are serving as executive producers.
Streep was last seen in David Frankel’s “Hope Springs” and this year narrated Mark Kitchell’s “A Fierce Green Fire” and Richard Robbins’ “Girl Rising.” She’ll next be appearing in “The Homesman”, “Into the Woods”, “The Giver” and “August: Osage County.” Jovovich is best known for her roles in “The Fifth Element”, “Zoolander” and all 5 of Paul W.S. Anderson’s “Resident Evil” films. She will be appearing next in “Phantom Biker”, “Cymbeline”, “Resident Evil 6” and “The Expendables 3.” Diaz most recently appeared in Michael Hoffman’s “Gambit” (no, not the X-Men character) and Kirk Jones’ “What To Expect When You’re Expecting.” She’ll next be seen in Ridley Scott’s “The Counselor” which hits theaters this weekend, Jake Kasdan’s “Sex Tape”, Nick Cassavetes’ “The Other Woman” and Will Gluck’s “Annie” remake.
All three actresses are repped by CAA.
