Based on the Norwegian crime novel of the same name by Jo Nesbø, THE SNOWMAN, looks to be like another excellent entry in the serial killer movie genre. Is that a thing? Well, it should be given how many we’ve had.
Starring Michael Fassbender and Rebecca Ferguson, the thriller takes play in Oslo and follows a murderer who targets “women he disapproves of,” taking their heads and leaving a snowman behind (which may or may not go hand-in-hand). Chloë Sevigny, Charlotte Gainsbourg, J.K. Simmons (in a very suspicious, possibly red-herring type role), Val Kilmer, James D’Arcy, and Toby Jones round out the cast.
While, at least from the trailer, the film doesn’t seem to offer much innovation in terms of stories about serial killer, but what it has in spades is gorgeous cinematography. The Norwegian landscapes in this film, covered in blankets of white snow, are breathtaking. Worth seeing for that alone? Perhaps not, but with Fassbender and Ferguson at the helm, the former being one of the best working actors today, there’s a lot of promise here.
The film arrives October 20.
