Spotlight star Michael Keaton will star in CBS Films and Lionsgate’s adaptation of the New York Times best-selling series AMERICAN ASSASSIN. Based on the novels by the late Vince Flynn, the film will be directed by Michael Cuesta from a script by Stephen Schiff.
The story is centered around a recent grad student who, after losing his fiancee in the terrorist bombing of Pan Am flight 103, joins the CIA in order to exact revenge. Keaton will play Cold War veteran Stan Hurley, who is assigned to train the new black ops recruit when the pair is dispatched on a joint mission to stop an operative from starting World War II in the Middle East.
Flynn’s American Assassin is one of 14 novels centered around the character of Mitch Rapp. The primary focus of the character is thwarting Muslim terrorist attacks on the United States and he is presented as an aggressive operative who is willing to take measures that are more extreme than might be considered commonly acceptable. His constant frustration with procedures and red tape are a major theme throughout the entire series. Fittingly, Flynn worked as a story consultant on the fifth season of Fox’s 24.
Keaton’s upcoming films include The Founder, in which he plays McDonald’s founder Ray Croc and the dramedy Buttercup, which he’s set to direct.
