Michael Pitt To Play Villain Opposite Scarlett Johansson In “Ghost in the Shell”

Boardwalk Empire alum is set to star opposite in the live-action adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s beloved manga GHOST IN THE SHELL. (Snow White And The Huntsman) is directing the Paramount film, which centers on a special ops cyborg, played by Johansson, who leads Section 9, a counter-cyberterrorist organization devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists.

Pitt will play a character known as the Laughing Man, a bitter and vengeful man with a body that is part robot. Maleficent’s Sam Riley was previously in consideration for the role. Johansson’s Lucy co-star Pilou Asbaek is set to play Batou, the best fighter in the section and second in command in the army.

Pitt, who also just signed on to star opposite Imogen Poots in The Sleeping Shepherd, has appeared in Seven Psychopaths, Murder By Numbers, The Village, and has had arcs on Hannibal, Dawson’s Creek. He is best known as Jimmy Darmody on HBO’s critically acclaimed series Boardwalk Empire, for which he won a SAG Award as part of the Steve Buscemi-led series’ ensemble.
