Michael Sheen has joined the cast of the upcoming Sony Pictures sci-fi space romance PASSENGERS. The Master of Sex star will voice a robot that is travelling on a futuristic spacecraft alongside Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence.
The plot revolves around a spaceship travelling to a distant new planet, with the passengers in cryogenic sleep. Due to a malfunction in one of the sleep chambers, Pratt’s character awakens 90 years too early. Terrified of growing old and dying alone, he decides to wake up Lawrence’s character, sparking an epic romance. The Imitation Game helmer Morten Tyldum will direct from a script by Jon Spaights.
The project has been in development for quite some time, moving from the Weinstein Co., with Focus Features also in talks to acquire the rights. Rachel McAdams and Reese Witherspoon were both previously attached to star. More recently, Keanu Reeve was attached, with Brian Kirk in talks to direct. Sony bought the rights back in December.
Sheen stars in Showtime’s Master of Sex, a role that garnered him a Golden Globe nomination in 2014. He is currently in production on political drama Oppenheimer Strategies with Richard Gere and Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Sheen is repped by ICM and Sanders Armstrong Caserta Management.
