Martha Marcy May Marlene director Sean Durkin may have found his lead for his upcoming biopic JANIS. Currently in talks to take on the iconic role of Janis Joplin is Michelle Williams. The film is based on the biography Love, Janis by her younger sister, Laura Joplin.
Joplin became a rock-and-roll icon in the 1960s and was loved by many before she died from a drug overdose in 1970 at the age of 27. Many still consider her one of the all-time great rock artists, especially during her time. The film is said to focus on the last six months of her life. Nina Arianda was previously attached to star as the singer.
Clara Brennan is working on the current draft of the screenplay and Peter Newman, who has long held the rights to many of Joplin’s catalog, will produce alongside Borderline Films, Uncommon Productions, Interal, and Seven Hills Productions.
Currently, Williams is receing awards buzz for her roles in the upcoming films Manchester by the Sea and Certain Women. She also has the Amazon film Wonderstruck waiting release and is working on South Pacific and The Greatest Showman on Earth with Hugh Jackman. In 2012 she won a Golden Globe for playing Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn and has been nominated for three Academy Awards.
