Writer-actor Mindy Kaling is teaming up with Oscar-winner Emma Thompson for a feature film depicting the behind-the-scenes drama of a late-night talk show. Kaling penned the script and will produce alongside Scott Rudin and Howard Klein. There is currently no studio attached.
The project follows a venerated late-night talk show host (Thompson), who is in danger of losing her long-running show right when she hires her first female writer (Kaling). It’s described as The Devil Wears Prada meets Broadcast News.
Kaling’s career continues to grow exponentially. She continues to write and star in the series she created, The Mindy Project, streaming on Hulu, and starred in last year’s Inside Out from Pixar. She recently signed onto Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time. Kaling is also attached to the Ocean’s Eleven reboot Ocean’s Eight, which also is set to star Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett.
Thompson can currently be seen in Bridget Jones’s Baby and lent her voice for Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast due out next year. She previously won an Oscar for her adaptation of Jane Austin’s Sense and Sensibility.
