Sabrina has her new Aunt Zelda, with Lord of the Rings star Miranda Otto signing on for Netflix’s adaptation of the supernatural Archie comics, Tracking Board has confirmed.
Kiernan Shipka stars in the Riverdale spinoff as Sabrina Spellman, with Jaz Sinclair, Michelle Gomez, Chance Perdomo and Lucy Davis also in the cast.
Zelda Spellman (Otto) is Sabrina’s sterner witch aunt (the other being Hilda, played by Davis). Proud and devout, Zelda believes there is no greater honor than serving the Dark Lord as a member of the Church of Night. She is the family’s disciplinarian, fiercely protective of Sabrina, and very much Cain to Hilda’s Abel.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is writing and executive-producing the new spinoff, with Lee Toland Krieger set to direct and serve as EP. Originally in development at The CW, the project with a huge 2-season, 20-episode series order.
It’s unclear how the Sabrina series will relate to Riverdale now that it will be on a different network, but it still has the same creative team behind it. Crossovers, however, would seem more unlikely now.
Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Archie Comics’ Jon Goldwater, who serve as EPs on Riverdale, will also serve as EPs on the spinoff.
The character of Sabrina has been the focus of discussion since Riverdale’s inception, when Aguirre-Sacasa indicated a strong desire to see the teenage witch show up in town and then ultimately lead her own series.
Otto’s recent TV credits include Homeland and 24: Legacy. She is represented by Gersh.
