Shortly after Interstellar’s Mackenzie Foy signed on to star in Disney’s THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS, Morgan Freeman has entered into negotiations to join the magical holiday picture. He would join Foy as heroine Clara and Misty Copeland as the lead ballerina. The film is being written by Ashleigh Powell and directed by Lasse Hallstrom (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Chocolat).
Freeman is in talks to join the film as Drosselmeyer, Clara’s godfather who is more than what he appears. He has a particularly close relationship with Clara and sets the plot in motion by gifting her with the heroic nutcracker on Christmas Eve in the first place. In some productions of the ballet, he is the one who knows the nutcracker must fight the mouse king and also the one who brings Clara back to the real world. It seems a particularly apt role for Freeman to take on.
Disney’s adaptation is based on the original story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffman. Sam Dickerman and Allison Erlikhman are overseeing for the company, alongside executive producer Lindy Goldstein and producer Mark Gordon. Sara Smith is overseeing the production for The Mark Gordon Company.
Freeman was most recently seeing in another magical film: Now You See Me 2. He’ll next be seen on August 19 in the Biblical epic Ben Hur for Paramount and MGM.
He is repped by CAA.
