NBC has announced that HAIRSPRAY will be their fourth live musical event. This will mark the network’s fourth live musical following The Sound of Music, Peter Pan, and the highly successful The Wiz. Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are set to serve as executive producer of the live show. The two were also the producers of the 2007 Hairspray movie musical.
Hairspray was originally a film released in 1988 starring Ricki Lake, written and directed by John Waters. Lake starred as Tracy Turnblad, an overweight teen girl in Baltimore who gains popularity on a local TV dance show and, at the same time, fights for racial integration.
Waters’s movie was later adapted into a Broadway musical in 2002 starring Marissa Jaret Winokur, Matthew Morrison, and Harvey Fierstein. The score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan earned all of them Tony Awards. Five years later, the musical came to the big screen with a star studded cast that included John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, James Marsden, Zac Efron and then-newcomer Nikki Blonsky.
The live event is slated for December of 2016.
