Community favorite Alison Brie is joining the throngs of Netflix stars for the second time, with a starring role in the upcoming comedy GLOW. The series’ title is an acronym for Glorious Ladies of Wrestling and is inspired by the 1980s women’s wrestling league.
Brie will lead the series as Ruth, a down on her luck actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds a new chance at fame in the world of female wrestling thanks to a new weekly series. The original series, also titled GLOW, premiered in 1986 and continued in a variety of ways after it left television in 1990. It was comprised primarily of actresses, models, and dancers trying to break into show business (just like Ruth).
This new iteration of GLOW was co-created by Liz Flahive (Homeland) and Carly Mensch (Orange Is the New Black), who will serve as showrunners. Jenji Kohan, best known as the creator of the series Weeds and Orange Is the New Black, will serve as an executive producer alongside Tara Herrmann. The series has been picked up for 10 episodes by the streaming powerhouse.
Brie is best known for her role as Annie Edison on the cult favorite series Community, but she has also cultivated a relationship with Netflix already thanks to her role on the animated series BoJack Horseman. Recently, she’s had a string of roles in smaller romantic comedy films, such as Sleeping with Other People, How to Be Single, and No Stranger Than Love.
