Reader’s Digest, Ben Stahl
Following the spooks of Stranger Things and Black Mirror, Netflix is developing a 10-episode adaptation of the classic thriller novel THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE by Shirley Jackson. Writer-director Mike Flanagan is the brain behind the project.
Originally published in 1959, the story follows four characters who take up residence in Hill House and begin experiencing increasingly supernatural phenomena. Jackson largely relies on terror and suspense rather than outright horror to affect her readers. Over the years, many critics and figures in the literary world have considered the story one of the best haunted house stories of all time.
Flanagan is no stranger to horror, having previously directed and written Oculus, Hush, and last year’s Ouija sequel. His next film, Gerald’s Game, another horror adaptation recently wrapped production. He’s represented by WME.
