Netflix Launches Flixtape – The Mixtape For Streaming Digital Content (Things We Love)

Ah, the mixtape. That carefully curated playlist compiled on an audio cassette which could make or break a college road trip – or a high school romance (side note: never follow up Bush’s Glycerine with The Smashing Pumpkin’s Zero, or vice versa). With the advent of iPods and mp3s, the mixtape more or less went the way of the Spice Girls, but now Netflix is determined to bring it back – in spirit, at least.

This week, the streaming service introduced Flixtape, which it describes simply as “a mixtape, but for Netflix!” They’ve even put together a handy explainer video for millennials who hear the word ‘mixtape’ and wonder if it’s a new Pokémon that needs to be caught. In the video, Netflix throws down the basic rules: First, come up with the perfect title. Next, meticulously craft your selections. Finally, share it with your favorite person. Simple enough (side note: never follow up Bloodline with Fuller House). The idea is to get people to share the digital streaming content with their friends, and thus the world can ‘Netflix and chill’ as one.
