Netflix has acquired the global rights to THE DISCOVERY starring Rooney Mara, Robert Redford, and Jason Segel. The Charlie McDowell-directed sci-fi romantic drama is set to premiere on the streaming service and will get a theatrical release in 2017.
Co-written by McDowell and Justin Lader, the film is set in a world two years after Redford’s character has discovered the existence of an afterlife. This results in millions of people committing suicide as a way to reset their lives. Nicolas Hoult was originally attached to play Redford’s son, but after he stepped down, Segel replaced him. Mara has signed on to play his love interest with a tragic past.
Alex Orlovsky from Verisimilitude and James D. Stern of Endgame Entertainment are set to produce. Julie Goldstein and Lucas Smith will over see the project for Endgame while Mike Goodridge, Dimitra Tsingou and Eddie Vaisman will oversee for Protagonist Pictures.
Netflix recently made a preemptive film rights offer for the unpublished Russian mafia manuscript for Vor by Rimma Rose. Netflix’s upcoming slate of original films include The Fundamentals of Caring with Paul Rudd, Tallulah with Ellen Page and Allison Janney, as well as War Machine starring Brad Pitt.
