Streaming giant Netflix is currently in negotiations to acquire a new spec script, YUBA, from new writer Eamon O’Sullivan. Channing Tatum, Reid Carolin, and Peter Kiernan of Free Association are co-producing with Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Energy Entertainment’s Brooklyn Weaver.
The film is a period piece about the California Gold Rush, specifically in the Yuba river valley, which was considered one of the most lawless places in the Old West. The story follows two main characters who are flawed and ambitious, much in the vein of There Will Be Blood.
Netflix exec Sarah Bowen brought it into the studio early. It’s expected to be produced for a budget around $25 million and will joins the likes of original films on Netflix such as Mascots, The Fundamentals of Caring, and Beasts of No Nation.
Free Association started with the Tatum-led Magic Mike and has since gone on to produce the sequels 22 Jump Street and Magic Mike XXL. They’ve recently wrapped production on the films Lucky Logan and 6 Balloons. They’re repped by UTA.
