Katy Perry and Ryan Seacrest are the only confirmed stars of ABC’s AMERICAN IDOL reboot, but ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey told reporters at the 2017 Television Critics Association summer press tour that the rest of the lineup will be announced “very soon.”
Auditions for the singing competition begin Thursday, Aug. 17, but the only confirmed member of the judging panel is Perry, who reportedly signed a $25 million contract for her slot on the show. Dungey did not address the star’s reported salary, but did acknowledge the business challenges involved in rebooting the series.
“We do feel like we hit the jackpot with Katy. She is an enormous star; she has great presence; she is a songwriter; she understands talent; and to have somebody like her on our panel as one of our judges is fantastic,” she said, adding, “This is a business, so we need to make sure we make the right decisions so that the show can actually be financially viable because my hope is that American Idol is going to have a home on our schedule for quite some time to come.”
Dungey also addressed ABC’s vision for the series, along with allegations that it’s returning so soon after Fox canceled it.
“We certainly want the show to be recognizable to the fans of the show. In terms of it being something that’s coming back too soon, if you look at the social media for American Idol, the fans have been clamoring for it to come back since the day it went away so we feel like they are very much excited and ready for the new iteration of this,” she said. “That said, this is going to be ABC’s version of American Idol and we’re really looking forward to being able to put our special stamp on that.”
