The spec market is back…or, at least one can hope. After a sluggish start to a usually busy Summer season, the past few weeks have shot a jolt into the market with no less than half a dozen new specs landing homes, and several doing so in A-list packaged fashion. And while several people may have been waiting to see how long the surge continued, this week has continued the upward trend in both specs out and set up, with two finding homes already this week, and now we’re hearing there’s a new horror spec that just may become the third, as it heads in to every major buyer with powerful names behind it. But don’t just take our word for it, instead, lets look at what spec is heating up the town, and who’s taking which territories.
The spec, written by 2017 Blood List writer Marc Bloom and entitled PRAY FOR THE LIGHT, is keeping its core plot points under wraps for the time being, but is being pitched as a contained horror in the vein of Panic Room and 30 Days of Night. It hit the market on Monday from manager Jon Hersh at Housefire Management, and as of today is into every major territory, with more said to be locking in spots by end of day. So, who’s going in where? Lets take a look.
As of this evening, we’re hearing that the script is going in clean, or with packages circling to: Amblin, Sony, Paramount, Fox, Lionsgate, Netflix, Warner Bros., Global Road, Annapurna, Screen Gems, Universal, New Regency, A24, New Line, Paramount Players, MGM, Focus, Media Rights Capital, and eOne are all locked up, with more still being fought over. Taking the project into these homes are Captivate Entertainment, Vertigo Entertainment, LuckyChap, Intrepid Pictures, Mad Chance, Unique Features, and Arcade Films.
So what is it about the script that kicked off the frenzy? We’re hearing that beyond the budget friendly ‘contained’ aspect of the story, there’s also a very well crafted franchise-starting element built into the story that would allow both a star-driven, or world-driven series to carry on beyond the original. The model brings to mind projects such as the Insidious franchise, or a majority of those Blumhouse brings to life.
Otherwise, keep it here as we continue to track this one into the evening.
