Fox Searchlight likes what it has seen from Nicholas Hoult in its upcoming film The Favourite, as the English actor is in talks to play his fellow countryman, The Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien, in the studio’s biopic TOLKIEN, the Tracking Board has confirmed.
Dome Karukoski will direct from a script by David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford, and the film will be produced by Chernin Entertainment. Fox and Chernin have been developing the project since 2013.
Tolkien will explore the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds love, friendship and artistic inspiration among a group of classmates who are seen as fellow outcasts at school. When World War I strikes, it threatens to tear his “fellowship” apart. This formative experience inspired Tolkien to write the Lord of the Rings series and The Hobbit while working at Pembroke College before he died in 1973. They went on to become two of the bestselling books of all time.
Interestingly enough, Hoult just played another author, J.D. Salinger, in the indie Rebel in the Rye. He plays another real person, Nikola Tesla in the Weinstein Company’s upcoming awards hopeful The Current War, which will screen at the Toronto Film Festival in September.
