Written and directed by Cabell, a former Navy SEAL, the film stars Laurence Fishburne, Leslie Bibb, Barry Pepper, Adam Goldberg, Clifton Collins Jr, Cole Hauser and Peter Facinelli.
Running with the Devil is based on Cabell’s own experiences working with the DEA in Columbia, which he turned into a story that follows a cocaine shipment as it travels from Mexico through America and Canada.
Cage will play “Cook,” the right-hand man of a cartel leader (played by Pepper) who is sent along with “The Man” (Fishburne) to audit the company’s drug supply when a shipment of cocaine is compromised. The rest of the cast will play other characters who interact with them and the drugs on its journey with Bibb and Facinelli playing the DEA agents.
The film is being produced by Michael Mendelsohn of Patriot Pictures, who produced recent Cage films Vengeance: A Love Story and USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage. Jim Steele. Mike Nilon, Etchie Stroh and Natalie Perrotta are executive producers with Queen of Colombia Pictures, LLC fully financing the film and Etchie Stroh handling international sales.
I’m a big fan of films about drug trafficking — who isn’t? — and I’m also a fan of Cage, who likes to see him taking on more challenging roles and hopefully finding some renewed success by doing so. The cast around Cage seems far too good for this to be another straight-to-VOD film like the other Cage films mentioned above.
Cage was at Sundance this year, starring in Panos Cosmatos’ midnight movie Mandy, which RLJe picked up for distribution last week.
