New York Comic Con received a big surprise this weekend when THE DEFENDERS team arrived on the scene with Sigourney Weaver, announcing the Alien star had been cast as the villain of the first season. Marvel-Netflix also revealed that Daredevil star Deborah Ann Woll would be joining the spinoff THE PUNISHER series.
The panel included Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Finn Jones (Iron Fist), and Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb, in addition to Weaver. No information has been given regarding a premiere date for The Defenders, but the series centers on the heroes of Netflix’s four other series coming together to protect New York. No information has been given about who Weaver will be playing in the series or when the show will debut.
NYCC was the second time The Defenders quartet appeared together, the first time being a digital meet-up last week when Ritter, Cox, and Jones dropped in on an online chat Mike Colter was doing to promote Luke Cage on Facebook Live.
Netflix and Marvel also revealed information regarding the Daredevil spinoff The Punisher will feature a crossover appearance from Woll as Karen Page. In season two of Daredevil, Page was sympathetic towards Frank Castle/The Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal, who went on to save her life after she had been kidnapped. Production on the series has just begun in New York, but a premiere date has not been given.
Weaver has starred in several movie franchises including Alien, Ghostbusters, and Avatar. She lent her voice to this year’s Finding Dory and will next be seen in A Monster Calls.
Prior to Daredevil, Woll starred in HBO’s True Blood as Jessica Hamby. She starred in last year’s Forever and The Automatic Hate.
