Octavia Spencer and John Hawkes have been tapped to star in the Eshom Nelms and Ian Nelms-helmed SMALL TOWN CRIME. The thriller has also added Anthony Anderson and Robert Forster to a cast that includes Clifton Collins Jr., Michael Vartan, Daniel Sunjata, Don Harvey, James Lafferty, Jeremy Ratchford, Caity Lotz and Dale Dickey.
Hawkes is set to play an alcoholic ex-cop that is trying to get his life and career together by investigating the death of a young woman. While he is determined to find the killer, he puts his family in danger. Spencer will step into the role as Hawkes’s sister and Anderson will star as her husband. Forster plays the dead girl’s grandfather.
Spencer has been behind this project since it has been in development and will serve as executive producer along with Mehrdad Elie of Avva Pictures. Brad Johnson and John J. Kelly, who have previously worked with the Nelms brothers on Waffle Street will produce alongside Parisa Caviani from Avva.
Oscar winner Spencer previously collaborated with the Nelms’ on the short film Chicken Party and starred in their 2013 feature Lost on Purpose. She recently appeared in the Divergent films and is set to reprise her role for the final installment, Ascendant. She can be seen next in Gifted with Chris Evans and the forthcoming NASA drama, Hidden Figures with Taraji P. Henson. She is repped by WME.
Hawkes recently starred in Everest opposite Jake Gyllenhaal and Josh Brolin. He is currently filming Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri with Peter Dinklage and Sam Rockwell. He is repped by Innovative Artists and Thruline Entertainment.
