NBA legend LeBron James makes a slam dunk for his production company SpringHill Entertainment, by adding the first scripted drama to its repertoire. Oscar winner Octavia Spencer is attached to star in the limited series. James will executive produce with his company’s co-founder, Maverick Carter.
The series will follow social activist and beauty product entrepreneur Madam C.J. Walker, based on the book ON HER OWN GROUND by A’Lelia Bundles, Walker’s granddaughter. Bundles will also serve as a consultant on the project.
Walker was born on a cotton plantation and was the first in her family to be free-born. Her parents both died of unknown causes and Walker became an orphan at the age of 7. During the 1890’s she developed a scalp disorder that caused her to lose her hair. She began to experiment with remedies and home made treatments in an attempt to improve her condition. In 1905 Walker invented a line of African-American hair care products. These business endeavors helped her become one of the first American women to become a self-made billionaire.
Spencer heard of the project in 2016 and actively pursued the role. WME, who reps both Spencer and James, pitched the film to James as his production company’s breakout series. They then sought after Nicole Asher to pen the series.
With a writer, lead, and producer set, SpringHill Entertainment presented to potential buyers, with Netflix poised to land the series. Zero Gravity and Warner Bros. will partner on the production. Black Nativity director Kasi Lemmons will exec produce and direct the pilot.
