“Oliver Twist” Getting a Contemporary Spin from NBC

Charles Dickens’ novel OLIVER TWIST is the latest classic to get the television treatment with NBC giving the contemporary take a script commitment. and Lionsgate are behind the adaptation with scribes and penning the pilot.

The drama is described as a sexy, contemporary take on Oliver Twist with a struggling 20-something female (Twist) who finally finds a true sense of family in a strange group of talented outcasts who use their unique skills to take down wealthy criminals. The original novel is set in the 1830s and centers on an orphan who is sold into an apprenticeship with an undertaker and eventually escapes, travelling to London where he meets the Artful Dodger and elderly criminal Fagin, who oversees the gang of juvenile pickpockets. The book was previously adapted into a feature film in 2005 by Roman Polanski and the popular Broadway musical Oliver!, which was turned into a feature musical in 1968.

Silver produces through his Lionsgate -based Silver Picture . Rodney Ferrell will executive produce.

Silver most recently was behind The Nice Guys starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, and written and directed by Shane Black. Previously credits include Veronica Mars, Moonlight, and Tales from the Crypt. They also have New People set up at Freeform with Lionsgate .
