Director Bryan Signer took to Instagram today to announce that Olivia Munn will be joining X-MEN:APOCALYPSE as the beloved character Psylocke. The immense cast also consists of franchise regulars James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, and Evan Peters along with newbies Alexandra Shipp, Channing Tatum, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Oscar Isaac, Lana Condor, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan and Ben Hardy.
Singer is directing from a script written by Simon Kinberg, Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty.
Elizabeth “Betsy” Braddock, otherwise known as Psylocke, was introduced in the UK 1976, but did not join the US run of X-men until 1986. The character typically serves with the X-men, but has also served as a villain. Psylocke is a stealthy martial artist with extreme telepathic and telekinetic powers that she focuses into deadly weapons, making her a fan favorite amongst franchise lovers.
The character supposedly appeared in Brett Ratner’s X-Men: The Last Stand, but since that was a terrible franchise-killing movie, we’re all going to forget that that happened.
Munn most recently starred opposite Johnny Depp in Mortdecai and alongside Eric Bana in the supernatural horror Deliver Us From Evil. She also appeared regularly on The Newsroom, which ended its run on December 14. She’ll next star in Ride Along 2, opposite Ice Cube and Kevin Hart.
