John Carney is being courted to direct STX Entertainment’s RUSS AND ROGER GO BEYOND, a film about the time when sexploitation filmmaker Russ Meyer and late film critic Roger Ebert teamed up to make Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.
The film has been in development for the past couple of years with many directors showing interest in the project — the most recent being Ben Stiller. Will Ferrell is attached to play Meyer while Josh Gad is attached to play Ebert. The script is written by Saturday Night Live‘s Christopher Cluess. David Permut and Richard Waltzer are set to produce alongside Mark Amin of Sobini Films.
Directed by Meyer and written by Ebert, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls was conceived as sequel to the cult classic, Valley of the Dolls, but then became a musical and melodramatic satire of the original about the the rise and inevitable fall of three actresses.
Carney is known for directing musically-themed films including Oscar-winning Once, Begin Again and most recently, the Sundance darling, Sing Street.
He is repped by WME and Casarotto Ramsay & Associates.
