HBO Films has released a trailer for THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS, which stars Oprah Winfrey and is based on a true story that was chronicled in the acclaimed 2010 book of the same name by journalist Rebecca Skloot.
Lacks was the African-American woman whose cancerous cells were stolen from her in 1951 and used to create the first immortal human cell line, which scientists had been struggling to build. Her harvested cells played a major part in the advancement of modern medicine.
Winfrey plays Henrietta’s daughter Deborah, who teamed up with Skloot (Rose Byrne) to learn about the mother she never knew and reclaim her family’s story.
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks premieres Saturday, April 22 at 8pm on HBO. It looks like a really interesting story that should be appointment viewing next month.
