Red hot spec market players Paradigm and Gotham Group are hitting the town tonight with a spec that promises a dark spin on the characters of Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland. The spec script DOROTHY AND ALICE comes from mind of writer Justin Merz, who previously sold specs Topsiders to DreamWorks and Rose Red to Disney (which Evan Daughtery is set to direct). The spec is said to focus on Dorothy and Alice, who meet one another in a special home for troubled youths, and after discovering they both share disturbingly vivid dreams of other worlds, find themselves on a quest to not only save the worlds of imagination, but the world around them, as their dreams become something far more real than imagined.
The spec, which is out to A-list producers tonight is sure to stir interest, not only due to the built in IP recognition of both Alice and Dorothy’s worlds, but also as the story is being pitched as an intelligent thriller featuring two powerful female leads (something Hollywood has been red hot on in 2017). And for a little additive value, lets also highlight the fact that repping this project is Paradigm agent David Boxerbaum, who has not only lit the spec market on fire this year with double digit sales, but who has also sold several high profile female led specs in the past year, including Marian, which sold to Sony for Margot Robbie to star, Princesses, which is set up with Amy Pascal and Lawrence Grey, and Young Oprah, which is currently in final negotiations.
Keep it here as we continue to track this one, and as the spec market start to jump back to life with the big end of year push on the horizon.
