Following a recent bidding war, Participant Media has acquired the spec THE PRICE OF LIBERTY from writer Michael Gunn. They will produce alongside Jane Rosenthal and Robert De Niro of Tribeca Films and Cary Granat of Reel FX.
Based on a true story, the spec follows an American diplomat in Kazakhstan after the fall of the Soviet Union. When the diplomat discovers a stock of enriched uranium, they must race to get it out of the country before terrorists secure it first.
The story is timely and the type of dramatic, political thriller that audiences love.
Gunn is currently a writer on ABC’s Designated Survivor and before that he worked as a story editor on The Whispers and The Newsroom. He sold another script, the 2015 Black List The Virginian, to New Line where Bradley Cooper is now attached to play George Washington. He is repped by WME and Principato-Young Entertainment.
Most recently, Participant was the production company for several buzzy films, including the recently release The Light Between Oceans, Denial, and Deepwater Horizon. This winter another film they produced, A Monster Calls, will be released.
De Niro is a partner with Tribeca, producing several films with them including this year’s The Comedian (in which he also stars), and upcoming films like The Irishman and Paradise Lost. He is repped by CAA.
